Meeting Joe
I knew two days in advance that Joe would be giving an interview at a radio station that was a short travelling distance away, so I had no hesitation in making the decision to go and possibly meet him. I’ve been a fan of Joe and his brothers for three years now; I’m a ‘fan’ of many other artists, but for me the Jonas Brothers have always been in a league of their own in terms of their music, personalities and their relationship with fans. To meet them was therefore something so important to me, but I wasn’t confident that it would happen.
I arrived at the radio station about an hour early, and was surprised that there were not many fans waiting. As time passed more girls started to arrive so that by the time we were expecting Joe at 3pm there were roughly 50 people. When 3pm came we were told that Joe was running half an hour late, so we would have to wait further still. It was so cold out; I can now say that I have done the popular activity known as ‘waiting in the cold for a Jonas’. Just after 3.30pm there were signs that he had arrived, only he’d come from a different entrance, so we just saw glimpses of him inside the building. We waited anxiously in that time, not knowing whether or not he would come out and meet the fans who were waiting for him, some as early as 9am.
Soon enough, we were told to form a line, so that Joe could greet each of the fans individually. We were delighted and nervous at the same time. I had decided from the start that I didn’t want a picture with Joe, because for me my aim of meeting him was to thank him for everything, and if I could tell him so I’d be more than happy. When it got to my turn, I shook his hand and told him that it was nice to meet him and he likewise said the same thing. It was so weird to think that I was just a stranger to him, and yet here he stood in front of me, such a familiar face, like a friend who I just wanted to ask about everyday life. Just as everyone says, he really is more attractive in person. Also, he is very softly spoken and has such a beautiful accent; you don’t appreciate it until you hear him away from any sort or microphone. I asked for his autograph on my Rolling Stone Jonas Brothers collector’s edition to which he replied “of course” and signed with a sharpie he pulled out (I imagine it was ‘the Jonas Brothers sharpie’ :) ). I also told him to send my love to his brothers, and that I have so much respect for him and his brothers. He thanked me and said he appreciated what I’d said. I thanked him for everything and told him how much I love ‘Just in Love with You’ and that it should be the next single. He looked surprised and almost amused that I knew of it at all, and again thanked me. Then we parted and just like that it was over. I stood waiting with the other fans whilst he greeted the remaining fans; I could have stood looking at him for hours, it was so surreal that he was stood in front of me. When it came to the end he again thanked the fans and waved, and entered into the building once more to use the doors from which he came when entering the studio at the start.
They say you should never meet your idol because they may disappoint you. This was definitely not the case. I will never forget his kindness to me and to all of the fans. He didn’t appear bored or tired with having to greet everyone who was there, and was just so friendly and warm. I couldn’t be more proud to call myself a fan of his.
